Who Can Volunteer?

To volunteer with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, individuals must be U.S. citizens, at least 17 years old, and have no felony convictions. There are no upper age limits or specific physical requirements beyond being able to perform the chosen tasks. Volunteers can participate in various missions, including search and rescue, boating safety education, and supporting the Coast Guard’s operations.

AUXAIR Miami

AUXAIR participates in many Coast Guard missions including Search and Rescue, Port Over Flights, Waterways and Coastal Security, Marine Safety, Pollution Response, and Aids to Navigation. It also conducts Logistic Transport Missions. AUXAIR is an integral part of the Coast Guard search and rescue team and its homeland security forces.

Auxiliary members undergo rigorous training to support Coast Guard operations across multiple mission areas.

Vessel Safety Checks

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free Vessel Safety Checks to help boaters ensure their vessels meet federal and state safety requirements.

Culinary Specialist

Auxiliary Culinary Assistants (AUXCA) support Coast Guard units by preparing meals and enhancing morale during missions, drills, and special events.

Public Education

Auxiliary Public Education Instructors play a vital role in promoting safe boating by teaching Coast Guard-approved courses to the public.

Surface Operations

The Boat Crew program trains and certifies members to operate Coast Guard-approved vessels and assist with various Coast Guard missions.

  • After completing basic training and qualification courses, members can qualify for Vessel Safety Checks, Surface Operations (boat crew), Public Education instruction, AUXAIR aviation missions, Culinary Assistance, and Emergency Management support.
  • New officers should start with the Auxiliary Member Resources section, which includes Job Aids, the Forms Warehouse, Auxiliary Manuals, the AUX Online Classroom, and the Auxiliary Directory.
  • Use the national Find a Flotilla tool on the National Site to locate your nearest flotilla by zip code. The Southeast District covers South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • All new members must complete the Auxiliary basic training curriculum, which includes Introduction to the Auxiliary, Vessel Safety Check training, and qualification courses for your chosen mission area.
